Summit Grips by Gibson

Gibson Parkour was birthed out of cooperation with American Ninja Warrior and international Parkour athletes. I designed a series of wooden plyometric structures that could be quickly snapped together to create a modular and mobile parkour course. The patent for this design was awarded for creating a quick but robust clip system to ensure the users are safe while using these courses. During this process, Boston Dynamics began using this modular system for the obstacle courses they used to train their humanoid robots.

Competitors in the International Strongman Competition have a unique problem: repeatedly dropping hundred pound rocks destroy everywhere they train (garage floors included). I worked with several athletes to design 50lb - 350lb Soft Atlas Stones to train with. From getting the correct grip from the material to designing extremely strong stitching, this project posed unique design problems.

Gymnastic grips are an extremely unique design project; they have to match the length and width of young athletes hands as they grow, they have to provide solid wrist support, and athletes can be severely injured if they fail. While working with Gibson Athletic, I designed the Summit family of intermediate-level grips for training athletes. In writing the patent for these grips, we designed them to be able to be tightened much more securely than conventional grip designs for added safety and support.

Reisport makes the highest quality gymnastic grips in the world, with their grips being used in nearly every World and Olympic competition. For all of their history, every Reisport grip was handmade in Reinach, Switzerland; I was fortunate enough to establish Reisport USA, the only production facility outside of Switzerland. From designing the forged die-presses to establishing the Quality Control documentation, this project was about maintaining the quality of a three-generation process.
